Most people are reactive when they see the expiration date on medicine is close or has passed. Their response is to toss out the product. This is oftentimes a mistake.
Truth is, medicines are viable and fresh long past the expiration date, and can be used safely.
The logic behind early expiration dates benefits the manufacturer, not the storekeeper. As the expiration date draws close, the store is compelled by law to dispose of the product quickly, often at a discount, and order more product. This cycle benefits the consumers – as long as they are able to purchase expiring products cheaply – along with the knowledge that they can be used safely for months after expiration.
