Saving Money On Pizza

The high cost of eating out extends to the main food groups (pizza, Chinese and burgers), but you can save more than a bit by making your pizza at home without a lot of trouble.

After many failures trying to toss frozen pizza dough thin enough to bake, Cash Cuddler bought the expensive Boboli crusts which are tasty and convenient, but expensive. This is contrary to Cash Cuddler’s nature, and a cheaper alternative had to be found.

A visit to a local Indian market (the Asian kind, not Native American), presented an interesting alternative to the Boboli crust: flat bread pitas without pockets, which are thick and sturdy enough to serve as crusts.

(any brand will do)

At $2.29 for 10 pitas measuring 8″ across, this is really useful and economical for personal pizzas (versus $3.49 or so for a medium Boboli crust). You just lay those out on your cookie sheet, and pile on the regular pizza ingredients, then bake.

Ordinary pizza sauce from a can is fine, and you then layer on your cheese and other ingredients. Here’s what was used to make a very basic pizza.

Cash Cuddler was too lazy to shred the cheese properly, and simply cubed it into small pieces. Even better, this was cheese purchased about 2 months ago and frozen until needed. Bet you didn’t know that cheese freezes well.

Combining these very basic ingredients (5 minutes of work) created a very decent pizza that passed the taste test. You can create variations of this basic recipe, but the method works and it’s cheap.
